How to care for your brand new sheepskin coat : A Complete Guide
Now that you have spent all that money buying the sheepskin jacket of your dreams how the heck do you care for it? Sheepskin and Shearling coats are known to be so durable that they will last decades if they are cared for properly. Since Sheepskin is a natural material it is soft, incredibly long lasting and very warm. But there are things that need to be done to ensure that they long good season after season.
Here is a quick guide to help you out.
MAINTENANCE
First off regular maintenance is a must. Overtime dirt and dust will collect and damage the material; regularly brushing your coat with a soft-bristled suede or sheepskin brush helps maintain a soft nap and will prevent that accumulation. If your sheepskin has a Nappa leather finish you can use a leather lotion VERY SPARINGLY to keep the leather supple and looking new. This should be done routinely throughout the season.
SPOT CLEANING
Make sure to spot clean any small stains or spills promptly.
This is our technique :
First gently blot at the spot DO NOT RUB, the idea is to remove as much of the spill off the surface without rubbing it into the fibers. A soft clean cloth will do it.
Second using cold water and a mild soap mixed together. The soap should be something for wool and sensitive fabrics we love Woolite it is perfect. Dampen your cloth and lightly dab at the stain make sure the cloth is NOT soaking and dripping wet.
Third let it dry completely avoiding sunlight and extra heat sources you have to be patient for this and just let it air dry. It may need a second treatment just repeat the steps.
DON'T WEAR IN HEAVY RAIN
Because it is naturally water-resistant I little mist or snow will not harm your coat. But remember water resistant and waterproof are two different things you do not want to get it soaking wet. If it does get wet shake off the moisture and hang it to dry in a well ventilated room so that it doesn't mildew. Remember let it air dry if you use any heat to make it dry faster the skin could become stiff and brittle.
Avoid Sprays and Chemicals
Oils and Chemicals such as hair products, perfume and room sprays can damage the natural material so always apply perfume and oils before putting on your jacket and make sure hands are oil free.
Storage for off season
One of the most important things that you can do is to store your coat properly after the season is over. Use a padded hanger and breathable Dust bag when you purchase from HipHopCloset.com you will be provided those. Do not use a plastic bag this can trap moisture and cause mold and mildew. Hang item in a cool dry place.
Following these steps will ensure that your coat will keep you stylish and warm for decades.
Additional tips if you need deep cleaning take your coat to a professional cleaner that specializes in leather and sheepskin avoid dry cleaning.
