Summertime in Brooklyn: The season of Block Parties
Brooklyn, NY, is the heart of urban culture and the birthplace of countless legendary hip hop artists, it comes alive every summer with the vibrant and energetic spirit of block parties. These gatherings are not just events; they are a celebration of community, culture, and creativity. It is an experience you do not want to miss, and no one does it like Brooklyn.
Brooklyn is a breeding ground for artistic talent. Block parties provide a platform for local artists, dancers, and performers to highlight their skills. From freestyle rap battles to breakdancing competitions, the creativity on display is awe-inspiring. By attending, you are not just a spectator; you are supporting and encouraging the next generation of hip hop talent.
There is something magical about summertime in Brooklyn. The warm weather, long days, and clear nights create the perfect backdrop for a block party. The energy is infectious, and the atmosphere is one of pure joy and celebration. Dancing under the open sky to the beats of hip hop music, surrounded by the vibrant community of Brooklyn, is an experience that embodies the spirit of summer.
It started for Hip Hop Closet in the summer of 2020 as a way to gather the community and stay connected in a healthy way during a very trying time. The brainchild of Marlon Rice Feel Good Fridays took place at the sight of the Black Lives Matter Mural on Fulton Street directly in front of Restoration Plaza. Every Friday we gathered and danced to DJs spinning classic tracks alongside the latest hits. Local artists popped up and entertained while local businesses set up shop out in the open air. It was therapeutic!
These block parties in Brooklyn were more than just a music event; they were a celebration of community. Neighbors, friends, and strangers came together, breaking down barriers and building connections. It was a space where everyone was welcome, and the shared love for hip hop created a sense of unity and belonging. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter, dance, and the vibrant energy of people coming together for a common love.
By 2021, Marlon was hired to curate arts and entertainment on Tompkins Ave for TAMA Open Streets, so we brought all that Brooklyn Block Party magic over to TAMA open streets.
It took 2 years to outgrow that space and in 2023 we moved the party over to our home at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and organized our 25th Anniversary Block Party to celebrate Hip Hop Closet and 50 years of Hip Hop and we had a TIME!!!
DJ Red Alert set the vibe with his set and throughout the day we rotated through 4 amazing DJ’s G Bro Da Pro, DJ Saucee and more.
The 40+ Double Dutch Clubs were on the scene, Philly Girls Jump drove up from Philly, and Monsters Dance breakdancers pulled out the cardboard and showed us how it's done.
Food was provided by East Coast Tacos, Pop Out Kitchen and icees by Tropical Delicious.
DON'T MISS THIS YEAR!
